The below information is extremely important and will help to ensure you have a fun and enjoyable event experience. Please take the time to read this carefully.

Compulsory Event Safety Briefings

  • Junior Events – Takapuna Reserve at 5.45pm
  • Adult Events – Takapuna Reserve at 6.20pm


Your Health & Safety

  • If you have any concerns about completing your event in a satisfactory and healthy condition, we urge you to withdraw prior to your event start, or drop down a distance.
  • If you withdraw during the event please inform an event official at the timing tents.
  • A St John staff member is situated near the finish arch for any medical issues before, during and after the event.
  • If you see a fellow participant in trouble while competing, please assist only if it is safe to do so and alert a Beach Series official or lifeguard as soon as possible.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of fluids before and after your event. Water and electrolyte will be provided at the event base – you need to bring your own drink bottle as we don’t want to be putting thousands of plastic cups into the environment.


General Event Rules

  • All participants must exercise a decent code of conduct during their events, including not deliberately bumping into other participants. This includes rounding marker buoys and generally being considerate of other participants around you.
  • Any participant who appears to be incapable of completing the event in a satisfactory and healthy condition may be withdrawn by the Event Director or a lifeguard at any time.
  • Any DNFs (Did Not Finish) must report to the timing tent when back at the event base.
  • We urge all participants to self-seed on the start line and go wide around turn markers or buoys to avoid being unintentionally hit by another participant.
  • If you are changing from your ‘default event category’ (the event category you selected when you registered online) on any given event night, then you MUST go to the Event Registration in Franc’s Bar between 5.00pm through to 15 minutes before your event start to let the event officials know, otherwise your results will be incorrect.


Start Marshals and Start Positions

  • All event disciplines will have a start marshal. They will determine whether the field is set and ready by raising an orange flag.
  • Participants must start their event between the start cones for their event option. Stand-up paddlers will start in water below knee depth, in-front of the SUP start cones.
  • Please remain behind your start line marshal, otherwise your event will not start.
  • When the orange flag in front of a field is raised (and still), you will then be in the starter’s hands. To avoid a false start or being disqualified, leave your start line/area only when you hear the hooter sound and see the orange flag lowered in front of your start line.


Finish Line

  • The finish line for all events is the inflatable arch. Please don’t stop until you reach the finish arch as your time will be recorded at this point.
  • There is a race clock located at the finish line, please double check your time is correct when finishing. Those in the 6.31pm start you will need to take 1 minute off the race clock, 6.32pm starters you will take 2 minutes off, 6.33pm starts you will take 3 minutes off.


Swimmer Rules & Safety Information

  • All swimmers must wear the correct coloured (for your distance) Harcourts Beach Series swim cap when taking part. Your first swim cap is free with your entry. If you lose it at any point you must purchase a replacement at the cost of $10.00 from registration (Franc’s Bar) No official cap – No swim.
  • All markers on the courses (as per the course maps) must be rounded, failing to do this will result in disqualification or reduction of series points.
  • To take part in any of the swims, you must be able to competently swim your chosen distance.
  • If you are in trouble at any stage in the water please raise your hand directly above your head so a lifeguard can identify you. If you are unable to, please rest on your back and await assistance from a lifeguard.
  • You must follow the instructions of the Surf Life Saving guards at all times whilst on the water during the event.
  • Any verbal or physical abuse of lifeguards or event staff will result in instant disqualification – and we’ll help you find another event to take part in.


Stand-Up Paddler Rules & Safety Information

  • All SUPers must be competent swimmers.
  • SUPers must wear a safety leash attached to themselves and their board.
  • SUPers please be courteous of other beach users and runners taking part by removing your boards from the beach as soon as possible after you have finished.
  • Ensure you leave your board in a safe place on the beach when exiting the water and running to the finish line. The Harcourts Beach Series takes no responsibility for boards on the beach.
  • For your own safety, it is recommended that all SUPers wear a lifejacket or buoyancy vest if you are not a competent swimmer.
  • All SUPers MUST round the flag on the beach before crossing the finish line.
  • If you are in trouble at any stage in the water please raise your paddle directly above your head so a lifeguard can identify you. If you are unable to please keep hold of your board (for buoyancy) and await assistance from a lifeguard.
  • You must follow the instructions of the Surf Life Saving guards at all times whilst on the water during the event.
  • Any verbal or physical abuse of lifeguards or event staff will result in instant disqualification – and we’ll help you find another event to take part in.


Runner Rules & Safety Information

  • All runners need to self-seed according to their ability. Slower runners should position themselves at the rear of the field on the start line.
  • Runners are taking part in events on a beach, over rocks and through shallow water, which have naturally uneven surfaces. Please watch your footing when taking part.
  • Please be aware of other beach users at all times.
  • If you come across an injured participant on the course, please assist, and if required send for the St John crew member stationed at the event base and alert one of the Harcourts Beach Series officials/marshals.
  • 7km Coastal Runners;
    • Series points will be deducted if found to be running across (rather than around) the Takapuna boat ramp carpark.
    • If you are injured, or come across someone else that is injured, please stay wait for the tail-end to catch up to you. They have a first aid kit, survival blanket and mobile phone.
