Come and join us at our ocean skills clinics! We cover a large range of skills from body position to buoy turning and much more. If you'd like to transition from the pool to the ocean or you simply want to refresh your open water skills we would love to have you!

Who takes the sessions? 

We are delighted to have our own, blueseventy sponsor to help you smash your goals this season! Dan has over 30 years experience coaching swimming and over 10 years of ocean swimming experience. He has coached many high-performance athletes and helped North Shore Swimming become the powerhouse of New Zealand swimming it is today. Through all Dan’s experience from learn to swim participants to Olympians, he prefers helping the everyday person like you!

What’s involved in the beginner/intermediate clinics?

In our beginner/intermediate class, you will learn the fundamentals of taking part in the beach series to ensure you are comfortable to get out there and do your best! You should be able to swim 500m non-stop either in the pool or ocean to take part. Meet on the Takapuna Beach reserve (near the Takapuna Boat Club) with your wetsuit on up to your waist, if you have one. Each session will start on land with a health and safety briefing and the dos and don’ts of open water swimming followed by 45 minutes in the water.

Session 1 – Saturday 2nd of November 2019

  • How to Warm-up and why
  • How to sight and swim straight
  • How to deal with a large number of people around you and any other difficulties you may come across
  • How to turn a buoy
  • How to start the race
  • Understanding what equipment is necessary for a good race

Session 2 – Sunday 10th of November 2019

  • Basic Swimming techniques
  • Where to position yourself at the start
  • How to exit the water and finish the race
  • How to draft off other swimmers to help you swim faster

Session 3 – Saturday 16th of November 2019

  • Recap on Session 1 and 2

What’s involved in the intermediate/advanced clinics?

In our intermediate/advanced class you will learn in-depth techniques to assist you in getting to the next level with your open water swimming. You should be able to swim 1000m non-stop either in the pool or ocean to take part. Meet on the Takapuna Beach reserve (near the Takapuna Boat Club) with your wetsuit on up to your waist (if you have one). Each session will start on land with a health and safety briefing.

Session 1 – Saturday 2nd of November 2019
On land (10-15min)

  • Health and Saftey check
  • Assessing the racecourse and conditions for an optional race, learning wind directions, tidal currents, and the swim course
  • How to Warm-up and why – you will be surprised who much this will help you swim faster
  • How to fit your wetsuit so you can get more flexibility and comfort

In water (45minutes)

  • How and where to start on the start line for your most effective beach start. – may depend on conditions or competitors
  • Advanced turning around the swim buoys
  • Advanced sighting so you don’t lose any speed
  • Advanced technique and breathing techniques
  • How to turn a buoy with effective time-saving techniques

Session 2 – Sunday 10th of November 2019

  • We go in-depth on the three main factors that will make you swim faster
  • Racing tactics, what you need to know to help you race faster
  • Evasive maneuvers and drafting, how to draft on other swimmers and how to get away from people who are drafting off you
  • Different types of drafting, let them do the work
  • How to exit the water and finish the race

Session 3 – Saturday 16th of November 2019

  • Recap of the previous two sessions and small race simulations
